Founded in 2009 by Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead, Altra emerged from the back room of a family-run running store in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. The brand was born from a simple, yet revolutionary, idea: to create a shoe that lets people run the way they were born to. Harper, leveraging his exercise science background and running store experience, began modifying traditional running shoes in a toaster oven to create a level, cushioned platform, which he termed “Zero Drop™.” This concept, now called Balanced Cushioning™, combined with an anatomical, foot-shaped toe box (FootShape™), became the cornerstone of the Altra design philosophy. The goal was to encourage a more natural foot splay and a lower-impact running form, distinguishing the brand in a crowded market.
