Founded in Kobe, Japan, in 1949 by former military officer Kihachiro Onitsuka, ASICS was born from a desire to promote youth health in post-war Japan through athletics. The company’s name is an acronym for the Latin phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano,” meaning “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body,” which remains the core of its design philosophy. Initially gaining fame as Onitsuka Tiger, the brand's iconic crossed stripes became synonymous with performance, famously worn by marathon winners and martial artist Bruce Lee.
