Founded in 1978 by Austrian-born hairstylist and herbalist-in-training Horst Rechelbacher, Aveda was established with a mission to provide beauty professionals with holistic, botanically-derived products that are good for people and the planet. Inspired by the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda during a trip to India, Rechelbacher rooted the brand's philosophy in the connection between wellness and beauty, formulating the first products in his Minneapolis kitchen.
