A Bathing Ape, or BAPE, was founded in 1993 by Tomoaki “Nigo” Nagao in the Ura-Harajuku district of Tokyo. A former magazine editor and stylist, Nigo was deeply influenced by hip-hop and 20th-century pop culture, including the 1968 film *Planet of the Apes*, which inspired the brand’s name and logo. BAPE’s identity is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Japanese idiom “a bathing ape in lukewarm water,” alluding to the overindulgent nature of its target customers. The brand quickly became a symbol of Japanese streetwear, defined by its limited production runs, which cultivated a culture of scarcity and hype. Signature designs like the full-zip Shark Hoodie, the Ape Head graphic, and the vibrant BAPE 1ST CAMO pattern became foundational to its aesthetic.
