Since the 1960s, Betsey Johnson has been a singular force in American fashion, building a brand on exuberant, over-the-top, and unapologetically fun design. A native of Connecticut with roots in dance, Johnson first made a name for herself in the “Youthquake” movement, creating whimsical styles for the New York boutique Paraphernalia. After a successful run designing for the label Alley Cat, she was revitalized by the London punk scene and co-founded her namesake brand in 1978 with Chantal Bacon, opening their first store in SoHo. The Betsey Johnson look is a fearless clash of frills and attitude—think tutu skirts, bold floral and animal prints, and an ever-present rock-and-roll edge, all expressed through vibrant dresses, quirky handbags, and statement shoes.
