Launched in 2009 by Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo, BLACK Comme des Garçons was a direct and strategic response to the 2008 global recession. The line was conceived as a way to offer the brand's avant-garde spirit at a more accessible price point, initially planned as a temporary 18-month project. However, due to immense popularity and high demand, it became a permanent and integral part of the Comme des Garçons universe. The collection is built around the color black, a foundational element of Kawakubo's design philosophy since the 1980s.
