Founded in 1822 by Édouard Bovet, the house was originally established in London to create exquisitely decorated pocket watches for the burgeoning Chinese market. The brand quickly became so synonymous with quality in 19th-century China that “Bo Wei,” the Chinese name for Bovet, became a colloquial term for a watch. After a period of dormancy, the brand was acquired in 2001 by collector Pascal Raffy, who revived its legacy of high-end, artistic watchmaking. Today, Bovet 1822 operates as a true manufacture, producing nearly all components in-house, including its own hairsprings. Production is extremely limited, focusing on ornate timepieces that showcase mastery of artisanal techniques like miniature painting, Fleurisanne engraving, and gem-setting.
