Founded in 2016 by fashion veterans Matthew Herman and David Kien, Boy Smells began as a candle-making experiment in their Los Angeles home. The brand was built to challenge the gendered norms of the scent industry, promoting a philosophy of “genderfulness” by combining traditionally masculine and feminine notes. Its core products—scented candles and, later, fine fragrances—are known for complex, unexpected pairings like cannabis and suede or rose and smoke, wrapped in a distinctive minimalist aesthetic, originally featuring a signature pink label.
