Founded in 1876 in New York City by Joseph W. Bradley, Luther C. Voorhees, and Lyman H. Day, B.V.D. began as a manufacturer of women's bustles before pivoting to men's undergarments. The brand revolutionized the market by introducing loose-fitting, lightweight waffle-knit union suits, famously marketed with the slogan "Next to myself I like B.V.D. best." By the mid-20th century, the brand was so ubiquitous that "BVDs" became a genericized term for men's underwear in the United States.
