Founded in Austria in 1956 by sports eyewear maker Wilhelm Anger, Carrera takes its name from the legendary Carrera Panamericana auto race, infusing a spirit of adventure and speed into its designs. The brand’s identity was forged through technical innovation, most notably with the 1964 patent for Optyl, a plastic 20% lighter than acetate that offered superior comfort and fit. This material advancement allowed for the creation of oversized, avant-garde shapes that became the brand’s signature, particularly its iconic aviator and shield-style sunglasses.
