Carthusia is a niche perfumery house from the island of Capri that channels the region's rich flora and history into its fragrances. The brand’s origin is traced back to a 1380 legend, where the prior of the Carthusian Monastery of St. James created a perfume for Queen Joan of Anjou from local flowers. The historic formulas were rediscovered in 1948, when the then-prior, with permission from the Pope, shared them with a chemist from Turin to establish what was called the world's smallest perfume laboratory, named "Carthusia" (or "Charterhouse"). Today, all production is still carried out by hand on Capri, staying true to traditional methods and using natural ingredients derived from the island's environment. Under the leadership of the Ruocco family, who took over in the late 20th century, Carthusia has grown from a local secret into an internationally recognized symbol of Italian artisanal excellence. The brand’s identity is captured by its "flower siren" logo, created in 1948 by artist Mario Laboccetta, which represents Capri's mythological heritage and the natural essence of the perfumes. Core offerings like Mediterraneo, Fiori di Capri, and Uomo are celebrated for their authentic, elegant compositions that evoke the sun-drenched Italian landscape.
