Founded in 1848 by John Cassell, a social reformer who began by publishing temperance pamphlets and educational periodicals, Cassell is a historic British publishing house. Initially a vehicle for social and educational improvement for the working class, it grew into a major international publisher of magazines and books, with notable moments including Oscar Wilde editing its *Woman's World* magazine. Over its long history, the company has undergone numerous ownership changes, eventually being acquired by the Orion Publishing Group. Today, the Cassell Illustrated imprint operates under the Octopus Publishing Group, a division of Hachette UK.
