Founded in Paris in 1991 by the designer of the same name, Christian Louboutin has become globally synonymous with luxury and sensual glamour, built upon its trademark red-lacquered soles. The founder, who trained with master artisans after being inspired by showgirls at the Folies Bergère, established a design philosophy to "make a woman look sexy, beautiful, to make her legs look as long as [he] can". The signature red sole was born from a flash of inspiration in 1993, when Louboutin applied his assistant's red nail polish to the black sole of a prototype, creating an instantly recognizable symbol of status and high fashion. The house's core is its high-heeled footwear, from the classic Pigalle pump to more avant-garde, embellished creations.
