Founded in the 1980s by the late British designer and artist Christopher Nemeth, the eponymous label began in London before relocating to Tokyo in 1986, where it became a foundational pillar of Harajuku street culture. A trained painter, Nemeth approached clothing as a canvas, initially hand-sewing garments from discarded materials like linen mail bags and charity shop finds. This DIY, art-driven ethos evolved into the brand’s signature aesthetic: deconstructed tailoring, anatomical cuts, and distinctive illustrative motifs, most notably the iconic rope print.
