Founded in 1918 as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute in Tokyo, Citizen has grown into a globally recognized watchmaker built on a principle of creating quality timepieces for all people. The company, officially named Citizen Watch Co. in 1930, was established by jeweler Kamekichi Yamazaki with the vision of producing domestically-made watches that were accessible to the public. This idea of democratic design remains central to the brand, whose name was suggested by the then-Mayor of Tokyo to reflect the goal of making watches loved by all “citizens.”
