Founded in 1941 as a family-run workshop in Manhattan, Coach began with six artisans handcrafting leather goods. Inspired by the soft, durable quality of a worn baseball glove, co-founder Miles Cahn developed a process to make leather stronger and more supple. This innovation, coupled with his wife Lillian Cahn’s suggestion to create women's handbags, set the foundation for the brand's legacy in American leather craft. The company became known for its practical, high-quality leather goods, further defined in the 1960s by designer Bonnie Cashin, who introduced vibrant colors and signature hardware like the brass turn-key toggle.
