Founded in 1969 in Tokyo by self-taught designer Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons is a pioneering Japanese fashion house that fundamentally altered the global fashion landscape. Kawakubo, who approached design from a conceptual standpoint without formal training, introduced a radical "anti-fashion" aesthetic that challenged Western conventions of beauty and proportion. The brand made its controversial Paris debut in 1981, shocking critics with its distressed fabrics, unfinished hems, asymmetrical cuts, and a poignant use of black.
