Founded in 2009 by Rei Kawakubo in Tokyo, BLACK Comme des Garçons was initially conceived as an 18-month pop-up project in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The diffusion line was designed to counter the era's economic gloom by offering a more accessible, everyday approach to the parent label's avant-garde aesthetic. Due to overwhelming global demand, it quickly evolved into a permanent fixture within the Comme des Garçons universe.
