Founded in 1946 by Cornelia James, an Austrian-Jewish refugee who studied art and design in Vienna before fleeing to England, the eponymous brand quickly became a staple of post-war British fashion. Known as the "colour Queen of England" by Vogue, James brought vibrant leather gloves to a drab, rationed world. The brand's defining moment came in 1947 when Norman Hartnell commissioned the "going-away" gloves for Princess Elizabeth's honeymoon, sparking a lifelong relationship with the British Royal Family that culminated in a Royal Warrant in 1979.
