Dr. Martens originated not in the UK, but in post-war Munich in 1945, when Dr. Klaus Märtens, a German army doctor, designed a unique air-cushioned sole to aid his recovery from a broken foot. He and his university friend Dr. Herbert Funk began formal production in 1947, using repurposed military supplies. The design was licensed by the British Griggs family in 1959, who anglicized the name and, on April 1st, 1960, released the iconic 1460 boot, distinguished by its yellow welt stitching, grooved sole, and a black-and-yellow heel loop.
