Founded in 1966 in New York by Leslie George Katz—a former Black Mountain College student rooted in a deep appreciation for American art—the Eakins Press Foundation is a non-profit publishing house dedicated to the advancement of literature and visual culture. Named after the American painter Thomas Eakins, the press was established to champion works that defend artistic integrity and human excellence. The foundation's inaugural publications, including a facsimile of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass and Walker Evans's Message from the Interior, set a rigorous standard for its future endeavors.
