Founded by Japanese designer Daiki Suzuki in New York in 1999, Engineered Garments operates under the influential Nepenthes umbrella. The brand was born from Suzuki’s experience as a vintage clothing buyer, which informed his unique approach to design. The name itself stems from a patternmaker’s observation that the clothes were not so much designed as “engineered,” a philosophy that has defined the brand’s identity. Suzuki deconstructs and reinterprets American archetypes—sportswear, workwear, military uniforms, and classic tailoring—through a distinctly Japanese lens, focusing on intricate construction and utilitarian details.
