Founded in 1856 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by Dr. Josef Girard and Urs Schild, Eterna is a cornerstone of Swiss horological history. The brand is best known for its profound impact on mechanical watchmaking, most notably the 1948 invention of the Eterna-Matic—a friction-reducing, ball-bearing mounted rotor system that set the standard for modern automatic movements. Eterna also established ETA, the legendary movement manufacturer that supplied much of the Swiss watch industry before becoming a separate entity.
