Founded in Rome in 1943 by sisters Zoe, Micol, and Giovanna Fontana, Sorelle Fontana became a cornerstone of Italian haute couture. Emerging from their mother's small-town dressmaking shop, the sisters established an atelier in Rome that quickly gained favor among the city's aristocracy. Their international breakthrough came in 1949 when they designed the wedding dress for actress Linda Christian's marriage to Tyrone Power, an event that captured global media attention. This catapulted the brand to fame, making it a go-to for Hollywood's elite and solidifying its role in the birth of the "Made in Italy" phenomenon.\n\nThe house became synonymous with glamorous, feminine designs, creating iconic looks for stars like Ava Gardner—for whom they designed the famous \"pretino\" (little priest) dress—Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly, as well as first ladies like Jacqueline Kennedy. Known for exquisite craftsmanship, particularly in evening gowns and romantic wedding dresses, Sorelle Fontana helped establish Rome as a rival to Paris in the world of high fashion. After decades of success, the sisters withdrew from official haute couture events in 1972 and sold the company in 1992. To preserve their legacy, the Micol Fontana Foundation was established in 1994, housing an extensive archive of their historic creations.
