Founded in 1998 by toy collector Mike Becker, Funko began as a small, nostalgia-driven project creating bobbleheads of retro characters like the Big Boy mascot. The American company, headquartered in Everett, Washington, transformed after being acquired by Brian Mariotti in 2005, who dramatically expanded its licensing agreements. The brand’s global explosion came with the 2010 introduction of its Pop! Vinyl line—figures defined by their Japanese chibi-inspired style of oversized heads, small bodies, and simple black eyes. By securing over 1,000 licenses, Funko translates characters from nearly every corner of pop culture—including film, television, sports, and music—into tangible, affordable collectibles for a broad fanbase.
