Founded in Tokyo by designer Mikio Sakabe, GROUNDS launched in 2019 with the conceptual goal of “LEAP GRAVITY.” The brand redefines footwear by creating a new relationship between the wearer and the earth, expressed through its signature sculptural soles. A graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Sakabe applies an architectural approach to design, developing each new sole shape from handmade clay prototypes. The resulting forms are futuristic and often transparent, giving the impression of walking on air.
