Known as the “King of Diamonds,” Harry Winston redefined American luxury jewelry after its founding in New York City in 1932. The son of a jeweler, Harry Winston possessed an innate gemological expertise, building his empire by acquiring and recutting some of history’s most famous stones, including the Jonker, Vargas, and, most notably, the Hope Diamond, which he later donated to the Smithsonian Institution. This act cemented a legacy of philanthropy that continues through the company’s charitable programs. The brand’s design philosophy was revolutionary: rather than fitting gems into a setting, the setting was built to showcase the individual brilliance of the stones. This led to the creation of the iconic “Winston Cluster” in the 1940s, a technique of setting pear, marquise, and round diamonds at varying angles in discreet platinum settings to maximize their sparkle, making them appear to float.
