Established in 1870 as a furrier to the Russian aristocracy in St. Petersburg, J. Mendel evolved into a Parisian couture house before fifth-generation designer Gilles Mendel relocated it to New York in 1981. He transformed the heritage brand from a fur specialist into a full-fledged luxury fashion house, launching a ready-to-wear collection in 2002. The brand became synonymous with luxe-femininity and impeccable craftsmanship, particularly celebrated for its sculptural evening gowns and innovative use of fur as fabric. J. Mendel's creations were red-carpet staples, worn by celebrities like Taylor Swift and Amal Clooney, and the house was recognized with a CFDA induction in 2003 and a Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in 2011.
