Launched in Antwerp in 2010, Jan-Jan Van Essche’s eponymous label proposes an alternative to the cyclical nature of fashion. A 2003 graduate of the city's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, the designer's work is rooted in a philosophy of “Yukkuri,” or “taking it easy,” which translates into annual “wardrobes” rather than seasonal collections. The brand’s core principle is creating garments that allow the wearer’s body to give them shape, not the other way around. This is achieved through amplified, fluid silhouettes, minimal seams, and patterns inspired by ethnographic garments from around the globe, such as the West African ‘boubou’ and traditional Japanese kimonos.
