A pivotal figure in Japanese avant-garde fashion, Junya Watanabe launched his eponymous label in 1992 under the mentorship of Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. After graduating from Bunka Fashion College and honing his skills as a patternmaker at CdG, Watanabe developed a distinct design language celebrated for its intellectual rigor and technical ingenuity. Often dubbed “techno-couture,” his work involves the deconstruction and reconstruction of classic garments—from trench coats and biker jackets to denim and workwear—using technologically advanced textiles and unexpected pattern-making. This approach redefines traditional silhouettes, merging the familiar with the experimental through intricate patchwork, complex draping, and structural forms.
