Japanese designer Junya Watanabe, a protégé of Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo, launched his namesake label in 1992. Often described as “techno-couture,” his work is defined by an avant-garde deconstruction and reconstruction of classic garments, particularly workwear and tailoring. Watanabe is celebrated for his intellectual approach, reengineering traditional silhouettes through complex pattern-making and the use of innovative, synthetic, and technologically advanced textiles. The result is intellectually rigorous yet wearable apparel, from intricately patchworked denim to architecturally draped outerwear.
