Founded in 1935 by Armand Petitjean, a former perfumer and executive who had worked with François Coty, Lancôme was created to export a vision of French elegance and beauty to the world. The brand, whose name was inspired by the Le Château de Lancosme castle and its emblematic rose symbol by the flowers in the surrounding area, debuted with five fragrances at the Brussels World's Fair. It quickly expanded into skincare with its innovative Nutrix repair cream in 1936 and then into makeup, establishing a three-pillar approach that defines it to this day.
