Founded in Paris in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela and his business partner Jenny Meirens, Maison Margiela established itself as a force of radical, intellectual fashion. From its inception, the house challenged luxury conventions through deconstruction, revealing the inner workings of garments by exposing seams and linings. Central to the brand's identity was anonymity; Martin Margiela himself avoided all public appearances and photographs, and the label was famously marked only by four white stitches, designed to be easily removed. This focus on the clothing over the creator extended to runway shows, where models' faces were often obscured to direct attention to the designs. Key creations that have defined its legacy include the split-toe Tabi boots and the "Artisanal" collections, which elevate upcycled and found objects into haute couture.
