Modernica was founded in 1989 by brothers Jay and Frank Novak, who started by collecting and renting out mid-century furniture. Inspired by the California modernism movement, they transitioned into manufacturing, establishing a five-acre factory in Los Angeles. The company has become a guardian of mid-century design, most notably by revitalizing the lost art of high-pressure fiberglass molding. After acquiring the original presses and specialized machinery from the factory that first produced the iconic Eames shell chairs in the 1950s, Modernica has continued to produce the chairs using the same heritage techniques.\n\nEach piece of furniture is handcrafted in their Los Angeles facility, which houses extensive wood, upholstery, and composites shops. The brand is celebrated for its commitment to heirloom-quality and architecturally inspired designs, from its Case Study daybeds and storage units to its signature fiberglass chairs. Modernica has also become a hub for creative partnerships, frequently collaborating with streetwear brands like BAPE and KITH, artists such as Futura, and companies like Girl Skateboards, embedding its classic designs within contemporary street and art culture.
