Founded in 1988 in Tokyo by Keizo Shimizu, Nepenthes began as an importer of American heritage clothing before evolving into a globally revered fashion house. Shimizu, whose deep appreciation for vintage Americana and workwear shaped the brand's foundation, initially focused on bringing "Made in USA" goods to Japan. When American factories began closing in the 1990s, Nepenthes shifted to creating its own in-house labels to preserve these manufacturing traditions.
