Established in 2012, Tokyo Design Studio (TDS) operates as an independent innovation hub within New Balance, bridging the gap between the brand’s Boston heritage and Japanese design sensibility. Led by Design Manager Shugo Moritani, the studio functions less like a corporate division and more like an experimental atelier, housed in the historic T-House in Nihonbashi Hamacho—a 122-year-old converted warehouse that doubles as a gallery and workspace. TDS is defined by its four design pillars: Precision, Nature Tech, Sports Craft, and Protection, which drive a rigorous reimagining of archival silhouettes into modern, often avant-garde forms.
