Founded in 1988 by glass artists Osamu and Yumiko Noda, the Niijima Glass Art Center is a creative hub located on Niijima Island, Tokyo. Osamu, a Niijima native, dedicated his career to exploring the artistic possibilities of koga stone, a rare volcanic material found only on Niijima and Italy’s Lipari Island. This unique silica-rich stone naturally produces a distinctive, translucent olive-green glass when melted, which has become the defining signature of the studio's output. The center produces both sculptural works and functional objects, including the acclaimed Tsukime Ware series, which features dynamic, tactile surfaces shaped by rapid glassblowing techniques. These handcrafted pieces, ranging from sake cups to mixing bowls, celebrate the primitive beauty of the volcanic material and are prized for their hard, glossy finish and natural warmth.
