The Nike x Sacai partnership is a highly influential collaboration that fuses the athletic innovation of Nike with the avant-garde design of Japanese luxury brand Sacai, founded by Chitose Abe in 1999. Abe, who previously worked as a pattern maker at Comme des Garçons, applies her signature hybridization technique to the collaboration, deconstructing and splicing together classic Nike silhouettes to create something entirely new. The partnership first began in 2015 with a NikeLab collection featuring a laceless Air Max 90, but it exploded in popularity in 2019 with the release of the LDWaffle. This model, which merges two vintage Nike runners (the LDV and Waffle Racer), is defined by its doubled-up details, including two tongues, two Swooshes, and a dramatically extended, stacked midsole.
