Founded by designer Takahiro Miyashita in 1997, Number (N)ine emerged from Tokyo's streetwear scene as a cult label celebrated for its deep-rooted connection to music and American culture. The brand’s name itself is a reference to The Beatles' experimental track “Revolution 9.” Miyashita, a self-taught designer who honed his skills by deconstructing vintage clothing, built a universe around the brand that blended the melancholic angst of grunge and punk with the romanticism of Americana, rock-and-roll, and military aesthetics. Signature elements included distressed fabrics, intricate layering, and obsessive attention to detail, such as musical notes sewn into the interior of garments and complex, functional button arrangements.\n\nNumber (N)ine gained a devoted international following for its emotionally charged collections, which were often direct homages to Miyashita’s musical heroes and personal experiences. After a celebrated run that included shows in Paris, Miyashita abruptly closed the brand in 2009 at its peak, with the final collection, “A Closed Feeling,” reflecting his desire to move on. Though the brand continued under new ownership, the original Miyashita-era pieces became highly coveted grails in the archival fashion market. In a significant development, it was announced in late 2025 that Takahiro Miyashita would return to the creative helm, signaling a new chapter for the iconic label.
