Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens launched his eponymous label in 1997, dropping out of La Cambre to pursue his singular vision. He achieved instant acclaim for a darkly romantic style that blended historical silhouettes with a modern, gothic sensibility, famously dressing Madonna for the 1998 Academy Awards. His work, often described as “demi-couture” for its intricate craftsmanship and couture-level techniques, established him as a powerful creative force. After his initial label shuttered in 2002, Theyskens honed his craft through celebrated tenures as creative director at Rochas, Nina Ricci, and the contemporary brand Theory, infusing each with his signature elegance and technical skill.
