Founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, Onitsuka Tiger began with a mission to promote youth health through sport in post-war Japan. The brand quickly became a leader in athletic footwear, pioneering innovations for basketball, running, and martial arts. Its most famous silhouette, the Mexico 66, was introduced in 1966 and was the first to feature the signature intersecting lines, now known as the ASICS Stripes. After merging with two other companies to form ASICS Corporation in 1977, the Onitsuka Tiger brand was retired before being relaunched in 2002 as a fashion-focused lifestyle brand, capitalizing on the trend for vintage sneakers.
