Founded in 1909, Pendleton is a sixth-generation, family-owned American heritage brand with roots in the Pacific Northwest. The company's story began when English weaver Thomas Kay established a woolen mill in Oregon in 1863. His grandsons later opened the Pendleton mill, producing vivid, patterned blankets for trade with Native American communities. This history is central to the brand's identity, with many designs drawing from Native American-inspired patterns. Pendleton is most famous for its high-quality virgin wool blankets and classic menswear, notably the plaid wool shirts that became popular with 1960s surf culture through The Beach Boys. Beyond its iconic blankets, the brand offers a full range of men's and women's apparel, accessories, and home goods that embody a timeless, outdoors-oriented style. It operates two of the few remaining woolen mills in the United States, in Oregon and Washington, maintaining vertical control over its production process from wool to the final product. The brand's commitment to quality is signified by its long-standing “Warranted to be a Pendleton” promise.
