Founded in 1937 by American company Bausch & Lomb, Ray-Ban was originally developed to provide pilots with eyewear that could reduce high-altitude glare. This functional purpose led to the creation of the Aviator, a style that quickly transcended its military origins to become a cultural staple. In 1952, the brand introduced the Wayfarer, whose novel plastic frame and trapezoidal shape broke from convention and was famously adopted by cultural figures from James Dean to Bob Dylan, cementing Ray-Ban's place in the lexicon of cool.
