Founded in Rome in 1959 by Renato Balestra, the maison is a pillar of Italian haute couture. Originally training as an engineer, Balestra’s innate artistic talent led him to fashion, where he became known as the “painter of fashion” for his masterful use of color and signature “Embroidery Painting” technique. The brand quickly gained international fame for its glamorous gowns and a unique, vibrant shade of “Balestra Blue,” which became an indisputable symbol of the house. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Balestra dressed some of the world’s most elegant women, from Hollywood stars like Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor to royalty and first ladies, including Empress Farah Diba of Iran.
