Founded in New England in 1946, Sebago was established by three friends—Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin, and Joseph Cordeau—to meet a demand for quality, casual footwear. The brand's first product, a hand-sewn penny loafer inspired by traditional moccasins, set an early standard for craftsmanship. This commitment to durable construction and timeless design quickly defined the company's identity. By 1970, Sebago introduced its most recognizable silhouette: the 'Docksides' boat shoe. Engineered for sailors with slip-resistant soles and non-corrosive brass eyelets, the Docksides transcended its functional origins to become a cornerstone of American preppy style, especially on university campuses during the 1980s.
