Founded in 2014 by Dutch fashion designer Bas Timmer, Sheltersuit began as a non-profit foundation with a singular, powerful mission: to protect people experiencing homelessness from the elements. This was inspired by the tragic death of a friend's father from hypothermia. The core product is the eponymous Sheltersuit—a wind and waterproof jacket that transforms into a full sleeping bag, crafted from upcycled and donated materials like tents and sleeping bags. The foundation operates as a social enterprise, employing former refugees and individuals with barriers to the labor market in its workshops, thereby providing not just protection but also opportunity.
