Founded by Nicholas Williams in 2017 and now run with Phil Ayers, Small Talk Studio began as a project focused on creating one-of-a-kind garments customized with intricate, hand-drawn illustrations. After Williams learned basic embroidery from his grandmother, he started applying his artistic practice to clothing, a medium that invited conversation and collaboration. Now based in New York’s Garment District, the brand has evolved from its origins in Oakland, California, into a dual-platform label that balances its sought-after custom, made-to-order pieces with seasonal ready-to-wear collections.\n\nThe studio’s design approach is rooted in research and experimentation, drawing inspiration from a wide array of sources to create a dense visual language on each piece. This signature style, which combines playfulness with a high degree of craftsmanship, has attracted a dedicated following and high-profile collaborators, including Carhartt WIP, Nike, and a notable commission from the late Virgil Abloh. Manufacturing primarily in New York City and using premium materials like Japanese deadstock fabrics, Small Talk Studio produces clothing that bridges the gap between art and everyday wear, turning each garment into a personal, narrative-driven canvas.
