Founded in 1968 in Göttingen, Germany, by printer and designer Gerhard Steidl, Steidl is an undisputed titan of visual culture and art publishing. Operating out of its historic headquarters at Düstere Strasse 4, the house is world-renowned for its fiercely independent approach to manufacturing. Every stage of production—from typography and paper selection to pre-press, printing, and binding—takes place under one roof, with Gerhard Steidl personally overseeing every project. The publisher produces some of the most sought-after photobooks in history, including the definitive re-edition of Robert Frank’s seminal The Americans and Karl Lagerfeld’s iconic fashion titles like The Little Black Jacket.
