Founded in 1949 in Sweden by architect Nils Strinning, String Furniture is a design brand rooted in the post-war ideal of functionalism. The brand was born out of a competition by the Bonnier publishing house to create an affordable, easy-to-assemble bookshelf. The winning design—the String System—featured slim, ladder-like steel wire panels supporting lightweight wooden shelves. This ingenious, flat-pack modular system quickly became a staple of Scandinavian modernism, winning a gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale and becoming a fixture in mid-century homes and offices, including the UN Headquarters.
