Founded by Shawn Stussy in the early 1980s, Stüssy originated not as a clothing line but from hand-shaped surfboards scrawled with a distinctive, graffiti-inspired signature. After gaining traction in the Laguna Beach surf scene, Stussy began screen-printing the logo on t-shirts, which quickly eclipsed the boards in popularity. He partnered with Frank Sinatra Jr. in 1984 to formally launch the apparel line, creating a new aesthetic that blended the laid-back Southern California surf culture with emerging elements from skate, hip-hop, and punk. This cross-pollination of subcultures became the brand's defining characteristic, establishing it as a foundational pillar of streetwear.
